Ideas to get you started

Here are a 3 ways to engage your school and community from simple to elaborate. Choose the activity that suits your students best.

A. Music Monday in the Field

  1. Register on the Music Monday website (www.musicmonday.ca) Put up posters a month in advance (available free from the website)
  2. Play the Music Monday Song over the announcements every morning, one week prior to event and explain its significance.
  3. Invite school trustees, administrators, parents and students to speak about the importance of music education. Invite the media as guests.
  4. Invite the school and sing/play the Music Monday song on Music Monday in the football field (or caf depending on weather) along with a few other tunes.

B. Joint School Event

(in addition to Steps 1-4 of A.)

  1. Organize a joint event with other schools. If they are close by, rotate joint rehearsals at each school
  2. OR if they are far away (i.e. another province), plan to execute a similar activity then have students build a facebook group and/or youtube page where they share their music, rehearsals, comments and plans with each other. Share each others recordings during class/rehearsal time as a way to mutually inspire.

C. Community Wide Event

(Can Also be done with other schools

(In addition to Steps 1-4 of A.)

  1. Choose a community partner such as: local or professional symphony or choir, local music retailer, a senior’s music group, media outlet, city hall, shopping mall, or sports team.
  2. Read below for some exciting ideas.
  3. Crowd

Did you know..

  • A school in Newfoundland took all their students to a local shopping mall and performed concerts by each grade level.
  • Schools in Ottawa got together with the National Arts Centre and the Ottawa Children’s Choir and performed on Parliament Hill under the baton of Boris Brott.
  • A number of public schools in Winnipeg got together and had different ensembles playing on street corners along Portage Ave. throughout the downtown core.
  • Elora Public School students formed the word “SING” on their football field and sent aerial photos to the local paper.
  • Over 1000 students from Saskatoon school band programs performed in the Saskatoon Soccer Centre.
