Cumberland Elementary School on Vancouver Island, BC was singing their hearts out today...it was quite the site...and sound! Hope you could all hear us all the way to the east coast.

Our event on the Hill was fabulous – a great “primer” for 2010! We had 400 kids from 7 elementary schools as well as members of the Cantiamo Girls Choir (who sang “Sing, Sing” for CBC Radio Two) and members of the Ottawa Children’s Choir. Choir Director Jackie Hawley and her daughter, pianist Laura Hawley, did a terrif...ic job rehearsing each of the school choirs over the past couple of weeks. National Arts Centre Youth and Family Conductor Boris Brott led the NAC Music Monday Massed Choir and spoke for an estimated audience of 300. It was a beautiful day here in Ottawa and the photo op – with the clock tower of Parliament Hill as a backdrop – couldn’t have been better. We had lots of media out including CBC, CTV, Global, Radio Canada, and the Ottawa Citizen.

Falkland Elementary School in BC kicked off the day with each class performing (singing, recorders, guitars, band) culminating with "Sing Sing". After recess, we had many students perform airbands. That evening we all came back to perform for a packed gym. We also took this as ...an opportunity to recognize the tremendous support of parents throughout the school year in so many ways.

This year, Music Monday is on my birthday, and I can't think of a better present than the feature of Music Education in our country. As an aspiring high school music director (one more semester!) I applaud the Coalition for their efforts.

I registered our school to participate in Music Monday in early January. However, things have changed since then and I need to update the number participating. Initially, I think I said under 100. Since then I have met with my staff and our Parent Council and I now have the entire school’s commitment (650 JK-8 students), many parents, local church choirs, the high school band and choir, the local teachers’ federation, a representative from SOCAN and the Mp and MPP have been invited. The list keeps growing.

I am planning for this to be a big event. If I can build awareness now, with the posters, I believe the numbers attending will further increase. I think the community support will be strong as our town is known internationally for our music festivals and our artistically rich community.

I have already booked a plane to fly over the school - while we will be singing - and take pictures of the participants who will be arranged in the formation of the word "SING !" (We have enough students for this to work regardless of any of the outside participants attending).

I am very excited to start promoting in the community and involve the media as much as possible. Anything you can send to support me in 'spreading the word' would be much appreciated.

I am from Sarnia Ontario, and we dedicated a month of musical celebrations to Music Monday. We had the youth perform with one of Canada's premier Jazz performers for four school shows, and a large public show, then a celtic show with world famous Lars Sloan from American Bagpipes, and kathy McMahon's highland dancers, ...with the youth from Harmony, and then a 6 hour musical telethon, with proceeds going to music education, and finally, a series of public concerts for Music Monday. It was a terrific success, and we got the message out!!!

I'm from Grand View School in Brantford, Ontario. The whole K - 8 school not only sang on the lawn, the way we have for the past few Music Mondays, but we also rented a bus and created some random acts of music in our community. We sang at the local grocery store, a nearby retirement residence and at the mall. The students really enjoyed taking music to the people and they enjoyed hearing us. Looking forward to the next Music Monday!
